A joint delegation from the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) and the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC) was received by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday. Their objective: to promote the « social pact for peace and good living together » in order to foster dialogue and stability in the Great Lakes region.
Comprising CENCO President Mgr Fulgence Muteba Mugalu and his General Secretary Donatien N’shole, ECC legal representative André Bokundoa Bo-Likabe and Pastor Eric Nsenga, the delegation is continuing a series of meetings with regional leaders. This initiative is part of an inclusive dynamic aimed at mobilizing political and religious players in favor of a peaceful solution to persistent conflicts.
Following an audience with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso last week, the religious leaders are seeking to rally Museveni to their cause. However, this initiative comes against a delicate diplomatic backdrop. Although Kinshasa and Kampala are cooperating militarily against the ADF in the east of the DRC, the Congolese authorities denounce the repeated hosting of M23 representatives in Uganda. Furthermore, Museveni advocates direct dialogue between Kinshasa and the rebels, an option categorically rejected by the Congolese government.
On the sidelines of their meeting with Museveni, the bishops are also expected to hold talks with representatives of Congolese armed groups present in Uganda, reinforcing their mediation for peace.
