Even before it is published in the next few days, the first 2025 report by UN experts on the DRC is still giving away its secrets. After the revelations about Rwanda’s role in training troops and Paul Kagame’s expansionist impulses, the latest revelations concern the fate of Corneille Nangaa, coordinator of the Alliance fleuve Congo (AFC), the M23’s political showcase.
According to UN experts, Nangaa’s ambitions are not viewed favorably by the Rwandan leadership. The man who embodies ‘the political face of the AFC/M23’ and gives the rebellion a Congolese dimension has reportedly lost influence in recent months.
“This change can be explained mainly by Nangaa’s personal ambition to seize power in Kinshasa by force. While Rwanda and the M23 supported the idea of regime change, they were not in favour of a military campaign aimed at Kinshasa”, argue the experts.
These new revelations could highlight internal dissensions within the rebellion. The experts have also revealed Rwanda’s intentions to reorganise the M23 by putting Laurent Nkunda, leader of the CNDP, the predecessor of the M23, back on the scene.
