The heads of state and government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) met on Thursday for an extraordinary summit of the organization’s Troika on the security situation in the DRC. Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi took part in the summit which was chaired by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
SADC did not disclose any conclusions from the meeting. What is known is that the participants discussed the report of the defense sub-committee on the revision of the mandate of the SADC force in DRC (SAMIDRC). No details were given but discussions were expected to revolve around whether or not to continue this military mission.
“The results and recommendations of the Troika Extraordinary Summit will be presented to the SADC Heads of State and Government Extraordinary Summit to be held shortly, at a date to be confirmed”, reads the press release.
However, the Tanzanian president had stressed that SADC “would do its best to help the DRC and reiterated SADC’s solidarity with the people of the DRC in a spirit of unity and cooperation.”
